Azerbaijan’s Aliyev urges peace treaty talks with Armenia

Baku is going to conduct negotiations on the basis of five fundamental principles for the normalization of relations, Azerbaijan’s President noted

BAKU, April 22. /TASS/. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has stressed the need for entering into meaningful negotiations with Armenia on the conclusion of a peace treaty.

"We have put forward a proposal consisting of five fundamental principles (for the normalization of relations with Armenia - TASS). Armenia has accepted these five principles. We are going to conduct negotiations on their basis. At the moment the two countries’ foreign ministries are forming working groups. I believe that meaningful negotiations must be launched in the near future without delay for concluding a peace treaty on the basis of the five principles," Aliyev told the 5th Congress of World Azerbaijanis, being held in Shusha, Karabakh.

The Azerbaijani leader believes that such a treaty may be finalized and signed in the near future.

"That done, Armenia and Azerbaijan may establish relations, including diplomatic ones," he said.

Aliyev stressed that Baku’s latest peace proposals demonstrated its "goodwill and far-sightedness."

"The revanchist forces that emerge in the limelight from time to time should know that this (peace treaty with Azerbaijan - TASS) is their sole way out and their last chance. If they reject it, we will refuse to recognize the territorial integrity of Armenia and declare this officially. Given the results of the second Karabakh war the Armenian side should be well aware what such a step might entail," Aliyev said.

The Congress of World Azerbaijanis has been held every five years since 2002. They bring together prominent representatives and activists of the Azerbaijani diaspora.
