Biden: US sending additional troops to Europe only to defend NATO allies

Biden said he had sent a clear signal that the US and its European allies "will defend every inch of territory of NATO countries with the full force of our collective power"

WASHINGTON, March 2. /TASS/. The United States is deploying additional troops in Europe only to defend its NATO allies, US President Joe Biden said in his State of the Union address to the US Congress.

"Let me be clear, our forces are not engaged and will not engage in conflict with Russian forces in Ukraine," the US leader said. "Our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine, but to defend our NATO Allies - in the event that Putin decides to keep moving west."

Biden said he had sent a clear signal that the US and its European allies "will defend every inch of territory of NATO countries with the full force of our collective power."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address on February 24 that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in order to protect people "who have been suffering from abuse and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years." The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories.

When clarifying the developments unfolding, the Russian Defense Ministry reassured that Russian troops are not targeting Ukrainian cities, but are limited to surgically striking and incapacitating Ukrainian military infrastructure.

‘Go after crimes of Russian oligarchs’

The US Department of the Treasury is setting up a task force to go after crimes of Russian oligarchs, Biden said.

"We are choking off Russia’s access to technology that will sap its economic strength and weaken its military for years to come," he said. "Tonight I say to the Russian oligarchs and corrupt leaders who have bilked billions of dollars off this violent regime no more. The U.S. Department of Justice is assembling a dedicated task force to go after the crimes of Russian oligarchs. We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts your luxury apartments your private jets. We are coming for your ill-begotten gains.".
