BRUSSELS, June 25. /TASS/. The EU heads of states and governments have discussed and rejected the initiative proposed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron to hold a meeting between the EU leaders and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing its diplomatic sources.
The leaders met for a regular summit in Brussels. The news agency underlined that this initiative was not included in the summit’s final statement on Russia due to remarks of several Eastern European states who said they stood ready to veto the document.
On Thursday, the EU diplomatic service told TASS that the summit would consider initiatives by EU members about future relations with Russia.
On Wednesday, the Financial Times reported that Merkel had put forward the proposal to invite Putin to the meeting of EU leaders. According to the newspaper, Macron backed the initiative.
