India ranks second after US with over 30 mln COVID-19 cases

The total caseload has reached 30,028,709 since the start of the pandemic

NEW DELHI, June 23. /TASS/. India recorded 50,848 new COVID-19 cases over the past day, while the total caseload has reached 30,028,709 since the start of the pandemic, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced on Wednesday.

India ranked second among the countries, where the total COVID-19 case tally has surpassed 30 mln, while the US is the world leader in terms of coronavirus incidence. According to the US Johns Hopkins University, some 33,565,289 cases of infection have been recorded in the country since the start of the pandemic. In India, this figure has surged by 10 mln in 50 days since May 4, when the health ministry reported over 20 mln coronavirus cases.

Furthermore, India’s COVID-19 death toll climbed by 1,358 over the past day to 390,660. In the last 24 hours, most of the COVID-19 deaths were registered in Maharashtra (482), in Tamil Nadu (194), in Kerala (141) and in Karnataka (139).

According to the health ministry, over the past 24 hours, some 68,817 patients recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 28,994,855. India’s daily number of recoveries exceeds the daily COVID-19 cases for 41 days in a row. As of Wednesday morning, a total of 643,194 patients are receiving treatment, 19,327 fewer than the day before.

The health ministry noted that some 5,424,374 people were inoculated against coronavirus over the past day, while the total number of those vaccinated hit 294,639,511.
