McConnell refuses to convene Senate early for Trump impeachment trial - newspaper

The impeachment resolution was introduced in the legislature Monday, it accuses Trump of "incitement of insurrection"

WASHINGTON, January 13. /TASS/. The US Senate will not be called on January 15 to consider impeaching incumbent President Donald Trump, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

According to the newspaper, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that the Republicans do not agree to convene a meeting Friday for the impeachment trial. Earlier, Reuters reported that the upper chamber could start debating the article of impeachment against Trump if the House of Representatives passes the document.

McConnell representatives said that the upper chamber will not convene to consider key issues on the agenda before January 19, the earlier date possible to start the impeachment procedure in the Senate. Therefore, Trump will not be removed from office earlier than he is supposed to.

On January 6, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building in Washington DC to stop lawmakers from officially certifying the results of the November presidential election in a last-ditch attempt to prevent Democrat Joe Biden from becoming the new president. One protester was shot dead during the unrest. In addition, three others died, the causes of their deaths were qualified as medical emergencies. Democrat lawmakers accused Trump of fanning the flames of insurrection and demanded that he be immediately removed from office. Some Republicans backed the move. Biden’s inauguration is scheduled for January 20.
