Reigning champ Sinner slides into final four at 2025 Australian Open

The 2025 Australian Open tournament is being played on hard courts at Melbourne Park on January 12-26 and has a purse of $59.7 million in prize money up for grabs

SYDNEY, January 22. /TASS/. Italy’s Jannik Sinner sailed into the semifinals at the 2025 Australian Open after defeating Alex De Minuar on Wednesday.

It took just under two hours for Sinner, who is the top seed at the tournament, to take down the 8th-seeded Australian, as he won in straight sets 6-3; 6-2; 6-1.

"He’s a tough competitor and an amazing player," the tournament’s official website cited Sinner as saying after his match against De Minuar.

"These kinds of matches they can go quickly, but they can change very fast if I go down with the level a little bit and he takes the opportunities so I’m very happy about my performance today," Sinner said.

In a separate post-match interview, 25-year-old De Minaur commented on losing on his home turf: "I'll survive."

"I’ll keep improving. And if anything, I just need to sit with my team and figure out a way to hurt Jannik on the court," the Australian continued. "That's ultimately the way we've got to look at it and find different ways, because at the moment we don't have it. So back to the drawing board, like I've done my whole career."

"I still don't think this is my ceiling. I still think I’ve got more in the tank. So I'll be searching for that," De Minaur added.

With the win, Sinner, the reigning champion at the Australian Open, took the final spot in the semifinals at this year’s first Grand Slam. Standing between him and a spot in the final will be 21st-seeded Ben Shelton from the United States.

In the other semifinal, 7th-seeded Novak Djokovic will take on 2nd-seeded Alexander Zverev from Germany.

Sinner, 23, has been at the top of the ATP (the Association of Tennis Professionals) Rankings since last June. The Italian player boasts 18 ATP titles. In 2024, he won the Australian Open and US Open tournaments. Sinner has also twice won the Davis Cup as part of the Italian team, in 2023 and 2024.
