2021 Australian Open: Vukic loses home opener to Russia’s Karen Khachanov

MOSCOW, February 9. /TASS/. Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov cleared the opening round of the 2021 Australian Open, which kicked off on February 8, after edging out on Tuesday Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic.

In a match that lasted over three hours Russia’s seed-19 Khachanov outplayed his wildcard opponent with the final score of 6-3; 6-7 (7-4); 7-6 (7-2); 6-4.

The 24-year-old Russian is the winner of four ATP (the Association of Tennis Professionals) tournaments and is currently ranked as the World’s No 20. Khachanov’s best result at the Grand Slam tournaments was reaching the quarterfinals and in his two previous appearances at the Australian Open he was stopped in Round 3.

The 2021 Australian Open tournament is played at Melbourne Park between February 8 and 21 and it offers $61 million in prize money. Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Sofia Kenin of the United States are the defending champions at the 2021 Australian Open in men and women’s singles respectively.

This year’s opening Grand Slam tennis tournament is held with a limited number of spectators in attendance due to safety measures against COVID-19 pandemic. The allowed daily number of spectators at all courts stands at 30,000, which is half of the regular attendance.
