NAIROBI, April 7. /TASS/. Kenya remembers the role of TASS news agency in the development of local mass media and hopes for cooperation in a new era after the resumption of work of the local bureau, Russian Ambassador to Nairobi Dmitry Maximichev told TASS.
"The resumption of the work of the TASS bureau in Nairobi is certainly a great achievement. Kenya remembers that the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (the name of TASS during the USSR period - TASS) once helped to create the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation," he said.
The ambassador pointed out that despite the risks of terrorism and crime in Kenya, many important events take place here. "Unfortunately, the news feeds of Russian publications about events on the ‘continent of the future’ are often reduced to grim crime reports, which does not reflect the reality at all. Africa, and Kenya in particular, is much more interesting and richer," the ambassador pointed out.
He added that although Kenya maintains freedom of the press with regard to domestic events, the majority of materials on foreign policy issues are prepared exclusively on the basis of Western media and convey to Kenyans almost exclusively one-sided Western narratives, so the contribution of TASS to the coverage of events in Africa is particularly important for the pluralism of opinions.
