Volume of extremist crimes detected in Moscow rises by 23% — city police commissioner

Oleg Baranov noted that Moscow’s police force devotes significant effort to suppressing the activities of organized groups and criminal communities

MOSCOW, March 27. /TASS/. Extremist crimes are on the rise in Moscow, with an increase of 23% reported for last year, City of Moscow Main Internal Affairs Directorate Chief (police commissioner - TASS) Oleg Baranov said while delivering a report on 2023 crime statistics to the Moscow City Duma, or city council.

"As a result of [police] work performed, 23% more extremist crimes were detected. Compared to the prior year, twice as many crimes were solved involving incidents of inciting hatred or enmity [on religious or ethnic grounds]," the police commissioner said.

Baranov noted that Moscow’s police force devotes significant effort to suppressing the activities of organized groups and criminal communities. "The personnel of the main directorate (police department - TASS) revealed almost 3,000 crimes committed [by individuals] as part of organized criminal groups, of which 362 were committed by groups formed on an ethnic basis," he added.
