World wide web is brimming with fake news, nothing can be trusted there — Putin

"It is clear that life is more complex and diverse than the way it is shown on TV screens or even on the Internet, where nothing can be trusted at all. There are heaps of fake news, deceit and lies. There are many information attacks. It has always been like this, but with the advent of modern technologies this has become especially relevant and effective," Putin said.

He stressed that "information is also a weapon of struggle and information attacks are one of the types of fairly effective types of struggle."

Putin added that he had suggested holding such a meeting because he wanted to listen to the mothers of military servicemen and hear their "firsthand" comments and ideas.

"Your information also comes from there. And a lot of information flows to me from various sources, but your assessments, your opinions, your ideas and your proposals are a different matter. I will see to it that what we will be talking about today will be taken into account and used in real life," he promised.
