Moscow demands arrest of Kiev’s jail warden for torturing Russian POWs

Earlier, Moscow courts issued arrest warrants in absentia for jail wardens in other Ukrainian cities

MOSCOW, May 26. /TASS/. Russia’s Investigative Committee has demanded the arrest of Alexander Balduk, head of a detention center in Kiev, for subjecting captive Russian soldiers, as well as Ukrainian civilians arrested for pro-Russian views to torture, Moscow’s Basmanny Court said Thursday.

"The court has received the Investigative Committee’s request to issue an arrest warrant in absentia for Balduk" for the brutal treatment of POWs and civilians, the court told TASS.

Balduk had earned notoriety for abuse of authority even before Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine.

Moscow courts earlier issued arrest warrants in absentia for jail wardens in other Ukrainian cities, including Kharkov and Sumy, charging them with cruel treatment of Russian POWs.

The Investigative Committee opened criminal cases in late April into the torture of Russian servicemen in Ukraine’s prisons. The Committee said it had evidence provided by over 20 servicemen, who are now undergoing medical treatment and rehabilitation.
