Risks of creating bioweapons remain, but those must be prevented — top Russian researcher

According to Mikhail Kovalchuk, the advance of modern technologies in biology and genetics raises the risk of creating such a bioweapon that is indistinguishable from natural pathogens

MOSCOW, December 27. /TASS/. Global risks of developing biological weapons persist, Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the National Research Center Kurchatov Institute, said in an interview with Rossiya-24 television as he called for preventing such projects.

"This present-day risk, it has always been there, therefore it was prohibited [to develop bioweapons]. This risk has not disappeared. <…> Therefore, these problems need to be considered thoroughly so that we can understand everything and prevent these possibilities," the researcher emphasized.

According to Kovalchuk, the advance of modern technologies in biology and genetics raises the risk of creating such a bioweapon that is indistinguishable from natural pathogens, as "in general, anything you want" can be developed. "And then you will be left wondering, what’s that? Is it of a natural or artificial [origin]?" Kovalchuk concluded.
