ST. PETERSBURG, May 20. /TASS/. Western countries obstinately attempt to take leading offices in the UN so that they can control the organization and advance their neo-colonial agendas, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said at a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.
"There’s a problem worth highlighting within the UN Secretariat, which in some cases forgets its core charter-based responsibilities," he pointed out. "Western countries are constantly trying to monopolize their influence in the United Nations, including by expanding their representation in the organization’s administration and securing prestigious key offices," Medvedev explained.
"As a result, international bureaucracy under the UN flag serves its own interests and shapes narratives that benefit neo-colonial powers," he said, emphasizing that "it’s key to counter modern practices of neo-colonialism."
"It is important to free the UN from the stranglehold of certain stances, imposed by Western countries, and get it to go back to its core principles, drawing on lessons of the past," Medvedev urged. "Today, the UN secretary general is expected to show initiative in fulfilling mediating obligations and personal courage in the spirit of his predecessors," he added.
