Russia stands for int’l cooperation in combatting corruption — Russia’s chief judge

Valery Zorkin added that it was necessary to carefully assess the use of foreign samples in the national legal system

ST. PETERSBURG, May 20. /TASS/. Russia’s withdrawal from a number of anti-corruption agreements does not mean the country’s complete refusal of international engagement in this sphere, Russian Constitutional Court Chairman Valery Zorkin said on Tuesday.

"Russia's forced withdrawal from some anti-corruption agreements, which was, as we know, due to hostile steps of international structures along the path led by the collective West, does not necessarily mean a complete rejection of international cooperation in the fight against corruption, both on multilateral and bilateral fronts," Zorkin said speaking at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum (SPILF).

"However, by avoiding self-isolation, one should prevent the blind copying of foreign experience. It is necessary to carefully assess the use of foreign models in the national legal system, in order not to fall into an unwise and blind imitation as it has happened many times," he noted.

Zorkin added that today an "intensive formation of the Russian constitutional-legal model of combating corruption is underway."

The 13th St. Petersburg International Legal Forum is taking place between May 19 and 21 and the forum’s theme this year is ‘Law: Lessons of the Past for the World of the Future.’ TASS is the general information partner of the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.
