UN Charter commitment must be reaffirmed by all countries — Russian Foreign Ministry

According to Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department of International Organizations Kirill Logvinov, "an example of such reaffirmation was the Russia-China joint declaration on further strengthening cooperation to uphold the authority of international law, which was signed in Moscow on May 8"

ST. PETERSBURG, May 19. /TASS/. All UN countries should reaffirm their commitment to the organization's Charter, as Russia and China have done, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department of International Organizations Kirill Logvinov said at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.

The diplomat noted that the first condition to "revitalize the UN" should be "the reaffirmation by all member countries of their full commitment to the Charter of the international organization."

According to Logvinov, "an example of such reaffirmation was the Russia-China joint declaration on further strengthening cooperation to uphold the authority of international law, which was signed in Moscow on May 8."

"In order to revitalize the UN, all member states need to declare strong support for an international system with the UN at its center, with the world order based on international law, and with the UN playing a predominant role in global affairs," Logvinov stressed.

Another condition is "an increased role of member countries, when all of them enjoy their rights on the basis of independence and on equal grounds, when all the countries assume obligations and responsibilities on the basis of mutual respect," Logvinov pointed out. "This itself would mean the realization of the fundamental principle of sovereign equality of states, which, in turn, implies the widest possible participation of member countries in UN international treaties and their support of these treaties’ consistent interpretation and application," the Russian diplomat said.

"It is the principle of sovereign equality that is particularly important for ensuring the stability of international relations," Logvinov stressed. "I believe that it will help overcome the main crisis for the UN, which is by no means a liquidity crisis, but a crisis of confidence that is much more dangerous in its consequences," the diplomat added.
