UNITED NATIONS, November 28. /TASS/. Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN described the upcoming US presidency in the UN Security Council as a "lame duck period," adding that possible difficulties for the UN body’s work may occur.
Commenting on the upcoming US presidency in the Council, he told a TASS correspondent: "The Americans will have a very challenging period of presidency in December, the lame duck presidency. This is how they call those who are going through final days or weeks of office, waiting to be replaced by their successors whose names are already known."
"Donald Trump, who has won the election, has already named the next US permanent representative. Clearly, all senior positions in the [US] Permanent Mission will be reshuffled. Under these circumstances, our colleagues will find it very difficult to promote their views, which in some aspects differ from those of the new administration," he said.
The presidency of the UN Security Council is held in turns by members of the Council in English alphabetical order for the period of one calendar month. The UNSC President presides over meetings and represents the Council in its capacity of a UN body. His responsibilities include organizing sessions, preparing reports and administering the rules of procedure. The process allows all members to take part in steering the Council’s work.
The United States will assume the rotating UNSC presidency on December 1.
