Russia supports ASEAN’s strengthening role in Asia-Pacific

Russia has been and remains a constructive and responsible member of the global governance system

MOSCOW, May 6. /TASS/. Russia supports the strengthening of a key role the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been playing in Asia-Pacific, the country’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

"We have invariably supported the strengthening of a key role ASEAN has been playing in the system of intergovernmental ties in Asia-Pacific," the Russian diplomatic office said. "Russia has been and remains a constructive and responsible member of the global governance system and intends to continue making its contribution to the promotion of a productive international dialogue and interaction aimed at achieving practical results."

The Russian Foreign Ministry also highlighted a joint statement published on May 4 by their counterparts from Indonesia, Cambodia and Thailand. "We can see that the calls in the document for inclusive cooperation and solidarity in the fight against current challenges and threats reveal a general commitment to ensure a positive development in the region and solve postpandemic recovery tasks on a collective basis," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"We consider the statement made by our friends in Southeast Asia to be a major contribution to the efforts to strengthen the multilateral approach and to create an atmosphere for cooperation and credibility, as well as mutual respect with due consideration for both regional and global interests," the Russian diplomats concluded.
