Vladimir Putin recalled that in the United States "the owners of these platforms were immediately shown their place"

The state remains the current structure-forming unit of the world order and attempts by global digital platforms to take over political or state functions have turned out to be ephemeral, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday. He was speaking at the plenary session of the Valdai Club.

"The coronavirus pandemic has clearly shown that only the state is the structure-forming unit of the world order," he stressed.

"Recent events have shown that the global digital platforms, with all their power - and it is, of course, obvious, as we saw it in the internal political processes in the United States - still fail to usurp political or state functions. These are ephemeral attempts," Putin said.

He recalled that in the United States "the owners of these platforms were immediately shown their place."

"The same is being done in Europe. If you look only at what fines are being imposed and what measures are being taken to demonopolize [digital platforms]," the Russian President added.
