Myanmar events not to be classified as military coup, expert says

The recent developments constitute an attempt to resolve a political crisis via legitimate methods, outlined in the country’s constitution, according to the analyst

MOSCOW, February 2. /TASS/. The events in Myanmar are not a military coup but an attempt to resolve a political crisis via legitimate methods, outlined in the country’s constitution, says Kseniya Yefremova, political scientist at MGIMO University.

The decision to introduce the state of emergency in the country was made after the electoral commission refused to investigate the violations during the November elections, won by the National League for Democracy (NLD) political party.

"The unwillingness of the NLD government to look into violations of electoral legislation, thoroughly documented by the observers, and its rejection to review the outcome of the recent election has led to the current political crisis," Yefremova said.

According to the expert, the opposition demanded to deal with those violations, contacting both the president, the electoral commission, the parliament and the Supreme Court, but received no response.

"The military went through every instance step by step, asking for investigation and vote recount. They proposed to assemble the Council of National Defense and Security, which the civilian administration did not do. Although it was this council that could make political decisions that could have made it possible to avoid the current state of emergency," the expert said.

"The president refused to react to an obvious violation of constitutional norms during the elections and vote count. Therefore, according to the military, he was deposed legitimately," Yefremova explained.

She underscored that no political party gained an advantage due to the political crisis, adding that, according to the Myanmar law, the Armed Forces are the guarantor of free and fair elections in the republic.
