DUBAI, April 16. /TASS/. Several flights were delayed and canceled at Dubai International Airport due to heavy rains, thunderstorms and strong winds that hit the United Arab Emirates. Emergency services closed several flooded roads in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah.
The rain, rare for the arid region, began on Tuesday night and is expected to continue through Wednesday, according to the UAE's National Center of Meteorology. The city was placed on orange level warning, with authorities urging residents not to leave their homes unnecessarily. Public institutions as well as many private companies have switched to remote working mode.
The heavy rains have flooded highways and low-lying roads. Local authorities have been forced to restrict the movement of public transport, with the metro operating with interruptions. Dubai police have urged drivers not to travel by car in bad weather.
Emirates and Etihad Airways, the largest Emirati airlines, have warned of possible schedule changes and advised passengers to arrive early at departure airports. Dubai-based low-cost carrier Flydubai said that several flights scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday had been canceled.
