TOKYO, April 25. /TASS/. At least 11 people were killed as the sightseeing boat Kazu-1 sank off the Hokkaido Island over the past weekend, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary of the Government of Japan Yoshihiko Isozaki said at a regular news conference on Monday.
"As of this moment, the bodies of 11 people were found and their deaths were confirmed," he said. The other 15 people that were onboard the ship, including two crew members, are considered missing, he said.
"The ship hasn’t been found as of now," he said.
Isozaki said Japan’s prime minister had ordered to do everything necessary to ensure search and rescue, and a disaster response center had been set up.
The Kazu-1 on Saturday sent a signal it was sinking, and contact with the ship was lost afterward. She had 24 people onboard including two children and captain and his assistant. The search and rescue operation is involving Japan’s coast guard and self-defense forces.
