Russia’s death rate from road accidents dropped 5% in 2020

Russia is currently guided by the Road Safety federal project of the Safe and Quality Roads national project to reduce its road traffic fatality rate

MOSCOW, February 5. /TASS/. The road traffic death rate fell by 5% in 2020, the Russian Interior Ministry’s press center told TASS on Friday after a video conference chaired by First Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandr Gorovoy.

"Our joint efforts helped to maintain positive trends in road safety. The key indicators of motor vehicle crashes decreased, but most importantly, according to preliminary statistics, the road traffic death rate dropped by more than 5%. In other words, over 900 lives of road users were saved," the press center said.

Gorovoy pointed out that, due to the pandemic, 2020 was a serious challenge for both people and state institutions. However, joint efforts made it possible to maintain and strengthen interdepartmental interaction in key priorities for road safety both at the national and international levels.

The high-ranking official emphasized that over the past decade Russia had done much to ensure positive dynamics in safety on the roads. In that period, Gorovoy added, the main indicators of road accidents shrank dramatically.

"According to preliminary statistics, motor vehicle crashes and road traffic fatalities dropped by more than a third. The motor vehicle death rate for underage and for pedestrians nearly halved," the Interior Ministry added.
