MOSCOW, January 28. /TASS/. The fire onboard the tankers with liquefied natural gas near the Kerch Strait in the Black Sea has been ongoing for nearly a week and won’t be extinguished soon, a source in the Krasnodar Region’s emergency services told TASS on Monday.
The fire onboard the Maestro and Candy tankers, owned by a Turkish company, broke out on January 21 near the Kerch Strait off Russia’s territorial waters. Out of 32 sailors, 12 have been rescued, all of them are the citizens of Turkey and India. According to preliminary information, the fire started when fuel was transferred from one ship to another. There were nearly 4,500 tonnes of fuel onboard the two tankers. The fire cannot be put out as gas is burning.
"No, apparently, this won’t happen soon," a source said answering a question on when the fire would be extinguished.
The press service of the Russian Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport confirmed to TASS that the tankers are still ablaze. "This is all the same, the tankers are burning, and there is still a threat of an explosion."
