MOSCOW, April 4. /TASS/. Kola mining and metallurgical company (Kola MMC, a part of Nornikel) plans to reduce emissions of harmful substances by 50% after the production’s modernization in the Murmansk region, Nornickel’s Director of the Department for industrial safety, labor protection and ecology Igor Rakhimov said on Wednesday at the conference Ecology Modernization of Russia’s Industrial Sector.
"The Kola [mining and metallurgical] Company, which is a key asset of Nornickel, will have a big modernization of production to improve the ecology situation," he told the ecology conference. "With the used technical solutions we shall cut the emissions by about 50%."
Earlier, the Kola MMC announced plans to invest 20 billion rubles ($348 million) in the production’s modernization.
The Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company is a leading production complex in the Murmansk Region - a major producer of non-ferrous metals, including strategic metals. The company is the world’s biggest nickel refining enterprise and Russia’s only producer of electrolytic cobalt of highest grades. The Kola MMC produces 39% of nickel and 42% of cobalt the Norilsk Nickel Company produces. The products are supplied to the domestic market and exported to European countries.
