RABAT, June 25. /TASS/. The Iraqi authorities currently do not intend to end their membership in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and Baghdad's demand for increased production quotas is in line with its ongoing policy within the cartel, the Iraqi Ministry of Oil said.
"Reports about Iraq's threat to end its membership in OPEC do not reflect the official position of the Iraqi government," the ministry said. The Ministry of Oil pointed out that Baghdad "constantly emphasizes the importance of revising production limits in accordance with the sustainable production capacities of member states."
"OPEC and its allies have responded to this trend by launching a process of reviewing the maximum sustainable production capacities of member states, which is currently being carried out in coordination with an independent international consulting firm and with the active participation of Iraq," the ministry noted.
"There is a high level of understanding of the special situation in Iraq" among OPEC member countries, the ministry said. According to it, "the country's oil and auxiliary infrastructure have been subjected to terrorist attacks, and this must be taken into account to ensure oil production in Iraq at a fair level."
Earlier, Shafaq News reported that, according to its sources, the Iraqi authorities are allegedly considering the possibility of the country's withdrawal from OPEC if it rejects Baghdad's offer to increase its production quota. On May 1, 2026, the UAE withdrew from OPEC and OPEC+, which includes 11 countries, with Russia among them.
