China can expand its presence in Russia’s electric vehicle market — expert

Zhou Liqun noted that the Russian government has adopted a strategy until 2030, according to which the share of electric vehicles may reach 30%

KAZAN, August 19. /TASS/. China may expand its presence on the Russian electric vehicle market, as there are all conditions for that, Zhou Liqun, Chairman of the Union of Chinese Entrepreneurs in Russia, said at a session on the prospects for bilateral cooperation in the automotive industry and special equipment.

"China is intensively developing cars running on new energy sources, including electricity. The Russian government has adopted a strategy until 2030, according to which the share of electric vehicles may reach 30%. Therefore, there are objective conditions for an increase in the number of electric vehicles that could enter Russia from China," he said.

By the end of 2024, the share of Chinese cars on the Russian market exceeded 15%.

According to statistics cited by Novgorod University at the beginning of the year, in 2024 Chinese brands accounted for 60% of all new car sales in the country.

Currently, cars running on traditional fuels remain the most popular in Russia.

According to the Avtostat analytical agency, a total of 17,800 electric vehicles were sold in Russia in 2024, which accounts for 1.1% of the total sales of new passenger cars.

The concept for the development of the production and use of electric transport in Russia until 2030, published by the Russian government in 2021, suggests several scenarios for the development of the market. Under the inertial scenario, by 2030, the share of electric vehicles will be 5% of the total. Under the accelerated development scenario, which involves proactive support for infrastructure and demand, the share may reach 30% of the market.
