Central African Republic grateful to Russia for helping lift embargo on diamond exports

The removal of trade restrictions on precious stones will create favorable conditions for stable economic development in the CAR, thus improving the standard of living for citizens in the country, the report said

NAIROBI, November 25. /TASS/. President of the Central African Republic (CAR) Faustin-Archange Touadera has thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for helping lift the embargo on the export of diamonds within the Kimberley Process (KP), the Russian embassy in Bangui reported.

CAR’s president has sent a message directly to Putin expressing his gratitude, the embassy said in a report released on its Telegram channel. "Touadera noted the special role of Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, employees of the Russian Finance Ministry and Russian experts working on CAR soil, who focused their efforts on restoring peace and security in the country," the embassy said.

The removal of trade restrictions on precious stones will create favorable conditions for stable economic development in the CAR, thus improving the standard of living for citizens in the country, the report said.

On November 21, the Kimberley Process lifted all restrictions on the export of diamonds from the Central African Republic. The embargo on diamond exports from CAR was introduced in 2013. It was partly lifted in 2016, allowing the country to supply diamonds from five zones not affected by conflicts.

The Kimberley Process (established in 2000 in Kimberley, South Africa) is an international initiative under the aegis of the United Nations headed by governments of more than 80 member-states. Its participants are countries producing and importing diamonds, which set the goal of removing ‘conflict’ diamonds used for arms and support of antigovernmental and terrorist organizations from being traded internationally. The Kimberley Process ensures control over export-import operations covering up to 99% of global turnover of diamonds.
