Spokesperson clarifies common currency not on Eurasian Economic Union’s current agenda

Iya Malkina stressed that different decisions could take place and they included the introduction of a single unit of payment and the rollout of common crypto- or digital currency on the Union’s territory

ALMATY, February 3. /TASS/. The issue of Eurasian Economic Union members shifting to a common currency is not on the current agenda, official spokesperson of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Iya Malkina said at a briefing.

"An interesting question and very often asked, by the way. I would like to say nevertheless that this matter is not on the active agenda of the Eurasian Economic Union at the moment," the spokesperson maintained.

Meanwhile, EEC experts consider that ushering in new approaches to payments is overdue, she noted. "However, absolutely different decisions may take place, not necessarily a transition to a common currency. In particular, let’s say, the list of possible solutions would also include the introduction of a single unit of payment and the rollout of common crypto- or digital currency on the Union’s territory," Malkina specified.

EEC experts are working on these matters at present, including a digital currency, she added.
