EAEU should reach technological sovereignty to avoid dependency, says Russian PM

"All governments of the Union’s countries should focus on reaching technological sovereignty," Mikhail Mishustin said

ALMATY, February 3. /TASS/. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has urged EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union) member states to reach technological sovereignty, concurrently expanding cooperation inside the Union.

"Within the framework of Russia’s chairmanship in the EAEU we urge all members of the Union to work on reaching technological sovereignty. This is an issue of security of critically important infrastructure, the development of the economies’ sectors, the improvement of the quality of people’s life," he said at the forum dubbed ‘Digital Almaty: Digital Partnership in a New Reality’ on Friday.

"This is particularly important for young people that are accustomed to quick, high-quality and modern services through mobile applications," PM noted. "Last year clearly demonstrated that we cannot rely on Western companies as suppliers of software and technologies," he said, adding that "in today’s world the lack of own solutions means colonial dependency on the countries that have them at their disposal and promote them globally."

"Obviously, the existing products are convenient. We have got accustomed to it over the years. But the access to them may be blocked at one moment, which coupled with the lack of own solutions or any alternatives will result in chronically lagging behind the rest of the world," Mishustin stressed. "All governments of the Union’s countries should focus on reaching technological sovereignty," he concluded.
