North-South transport route may compete with Suez Canal — Russia’s First Deputy PM

BAKU, October 28. /TASS/. The North-South transport route can turn into a real competitor to the Suez Canal over time, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov said on Friday.

"Meridian routes start playing a key role at present, the North-South route in the first instance," Belousov said. "The North-South route can become a real competitor to the Suez Canal over time," the official said.

Significance of the North-South route is not related to sanctions imposed on Russia and the Russian economy but rather to global shifts on international market and the move of economic activity centers to China, Southeast Asian nations and Middle East states, Belousov said.
