Import substitution is not cure-all, but Russia needs its own crucial technologies — Putin

At the same time, the Russian president admitted that the cultivation of tropical fruits is possible if "liquefied gas is spent on keeping greenhouses in the right condition"

MOSCOW, June 9. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that import substitution is not a cure-all solution. It makes no sense to grow bananas in greenhouses, but in crucial areas the country news its own competencies, he said at a meeting with young entrepreneurs.

"Import substitution is not a cure-all solution, and we are not striving to 100% import substitution. No matter how hard we try to replace the import of bananas, we will not be able to, despite the breeding success of your colleagues," Putin said addressing one of the participants.

But he admitted that the cultivation of tropical fruits is possible if "liquefied gas is spent on keeping greenhouses in the right condition." The head of state stressed that this is not a commercial production, but only prototypes. "We need to cooperate with everyone we can cooperate with, and we will do it, but in crucial technologies, of course, we must have our own competencies and we will develop them, of course," the President assured.

Putin agreed that development of own competencies needs state support.

"We will word these tasks and provide this support. You can't think of anything else here," he assured.
