US and 6 other APEC members pursue new data transfer framework to exclude Russia — Nikkei

According to the newspaper, the framework is set to replace the ones currently used by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum

TOKYO, May 16. /TASS/. The United States, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines and Singapore have agreed to establish a collective framework for the transfer of data, including personal data, that would exclude China and Russia, Japan’s Nikkei business daily reported on Monday.

According to the newspaper, the framework is set to replace the ones currently used by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, of which China and Russia are also members. Further on, countries outside APEC, including Brazil and Great Britain, would also be invited to participate, the newspaper said. There are plans to establish a framework for the transfer of large volumes of data, including economic data, that would match the size of a relevant mechanism used by the EU.

Among other things, the framework could be used for the expansion of electronic trade networks and for the introduction of regional unmanned transport control systems developed jointly.
