Hainan duty free sales up by 66.9% over the founding day weekend

Sales peaked on October 6 at 274 million yuan (about $ 42.4 million)

HAIKOU, October 9. /TASS/.

Sales of goods in duty free shops on Hainan for seven days of the weekend on the occasion of the Founding of the People's Republic of China (celebrated on October 1) amounted to 1.47 billion yuan (about $ 227.5 million), up by 66.9% from the same period in 2020, accorging to the data provided by the Haikou customs cited by "Pengpai" news outlet.

On October 1-7, about 2 million different types of goods were sold in all duty free shops island-wide, which is 136% higher than in the same period in 2020. For seven days of the weekend, according to the department, about 180,000 customers visited the duty free stores on the island. Sales peaked on October 6 at 274 million yuan (about $ 42.4 million).

A pilot program for the development of a chain of duty free stores in the Chinese province of Hainan was launched by the Chinese government in 2011. Since July 1, 2020, the island authorities have increased a personal quota from 30,000 to 100,000 yuan (from $ 4,200 to $ 14,200) for purchases in the province's duty free shops. The list of duty free products has also been expanded from 38 to 45.

The Chinese authorities see this program as an important part of Hainan's free trade port project. Sales of goods at duty free shops on Hainan in the first six months of 2021 amounted to 26.76 billion yuan (about $ 4.1 billion), up by 257.2% from the same period last year.

This year, two new duty free stores were opened in Hainan's Haikou. Previously, there were seven stores on the island: two of them are located in the administrative center of the province, Haikou, the rest — in the resort city of Sanya in the south and in the coastal town of Boao in the northeast. In June 2022, there will be another major duty free mall in Haikou.
