NLMK looking forward to fair approach in case with EU duties

Earlier, the European Commission suggested imposing climatic customs duties on import of certain goods, particularly steel, aluminum, and cement

MOSCOW, July 14. /TASS/. NLMK expects a fair treatment when assessing supplies of steel products to the EU in case of introduction of steel import duties in the European Union, and notes that it conforms to the level of European manufacturers as regards carbon intensity of production, press service of the Russian steelmaker told TASS on Wednesday.

The European Commission suggested imposing climatic customs duties on import of certain goods, particularly steel, aluminum, and cement.

"The NLMK Group is consistently dealing with reduction of carbon intensity of production and corresponds to the level of the best European manufacturers by this indicator. In this regard, we expect fair approach when assessing supplies to the EU and use of actual data of producers’ emission, rather than averaged or theoretical metrics," the company said.

The current action plan to achieve the climate neutral economy in the EU by 2050 does not make possible to assess all risks of import duties because it does not contain specific methodology for their calculation, NLMK noted.

The Russian Ministry of Economic Development estimated the impact of cross-border carbon regulation measures developed by the European Commission for supplies of metal products, cement and electric power from Russia to EU as $7.6 bln.
