China begins installation of a 100,000 tonnes drilling platform off the Hainan coast

The platform will produce hydrocarbons from wells of the Lingshui 17-2 project, which are under water at a depth of 1,500 meters

HAIKOU, February 6. /TASS/. The China National Oil and Gas Marine Corporation (CNOOC) on Saturday began installation work on a new 100,000-tonnes Shenhai-1 deepwater drilling platform delivered to an oil and gas field in the South China Sea off the Hainan Island coast, reported Xinhua.

According to the news agency, a large floating oil storage facility sailed offshore from the eastern Shandong province on January 14 and arrived at its destination on February 6.

The platform will produce hydrocarbons from wells of the Lingshui 17-2 project, which are under water at a depth of 1,500 m. The explored reserves of natural gas in this field, located 150 km off the coast of Hainan, amount to 1.59 million cubic meters, and its total deposits exceed 176 billion cubic meters.

"We plan to start production in June," Deputy General Manager of the project Liu Kongzhong told reporters. He specified that CNOOC sent about 80 workers and specialists to receive the oil storage at the destination.

The deepwater semi-submersible floating platform "Shenhai-1", according to representatives of the corporation, was designed and built by China independently, without foreign support. Its service life is 150 years. The maximum storage capacity reaches 20,000 cubic meters.
