US withdrawal from NATO could trigger irreversible breakdown of alliance — politician

The United States understands that the alliance has outlived its usefulness and no longer serves American interests, Viktor Medvedchuk noted

MOSCOW, April 3. /TASS/. The process of NATO’s deterioration is already underway, and a US withdrawal will automatically lead to the alliance’s permanent disintegration, Viktor Medvedchuk, head of the Other Ukraine movement and former leader of the banned Opposition Platform - For Life party, said.

"While [Vladimir] Zelensky was knocking on NATO’s door, requesting to join and demanding guarantees and benefits, a real process of the alliance’s weakening was launched, and it has an irreversible nature. Senior officials in Washington are increasingly indicating that the United States will withdraw from NATO, which will automatically lead to its collapse," he wrote in an article published on the movement’s website.

In his view, NATO’s collapse "will immediately raise questions about US claims to Greenland, Canada and the rationale of arms supplies to Europe, which continues a proxy war in Ukraine."

"If Europe does not hide that it seeks victory over Russia and reparations from it, Washington has realized that in this case it will face nothing but problems and inevitably a third world war, with the use of nuclear weapons, as well as the strengthening of Europe, China, and India," the politician continued.

The United States understands that the alliance has outlived its usefulness and no longer serves American interests, he added. "But Europe is also not interested in NATO, where it would play the role of cannon fodder. If the United States does not want to be drawn into the war in Ukraine, Europe does not want to fight in Iran. These contradictions cannot be resolved within the alliance, which is therefore doomed. It is clear that the collapse of NATO will be followed by the collapse of the European Union, but that is another story," he concluded.

Earlier, in an interview with Reuters, President Donald Trump stated that he feels "disgust" for NATO and is considering the US withdrawal from the alliance. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, the White House chief said he was strongly considering pulling the United States out of NATO after allies failed to support US military action against Iran. In the same interview, the American leader called the alliance a "paper tiger" and admitted that he was never "swayed by NATO."
