UNITED NATIONS, May 20. /TASS/. More than 28,000 women and girls have been killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since hostilities resumed in the enclave on October 7, 2023, the humanitarian information service ReliefWeb reported, citing the UN Women gender equality entity.
"UN Women estimates that more than 28,000 women and girls have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war in October 2023 – that is one woman and one girl on average killed every hour in attacks by Israeli forces," the report reads. "Among those killed, thousands were mothers."
"Since the ceasefire collapsed in March 2025, conditions have deteriorated further in Gaza," UN Women said, emphasizing that the situation has been worsened by the blockade of humanitarian aid and that now over one million women and girls in the enclave are "facing catastrophic levels of hunger."
Tensions escalated in the Middle East on October 7, 2023, when militants from the Gaza Strip-based radical Palestinian movement Hamas staged a surprise attack on Israeli territory from Gaza, killing residents of Israeli border settlements and taking hostages. In retaliation, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza, aiming to dismantle the political and military infrastructure of Hamas and secure the release of the hostages.
On March 18, 2025, the Israeli army resumed fighting in Gaza, launching intense strikes on the enclave and thus breaking the ceasefire established in January of this year.
