TUNIS, April 22. /TASS/. Two leaders of the Palestinian radical group Islamic Jihad have been detained in Damascus, the Al Hadath television channel reported, citing sources.
According to the sources, the two, Khaled Khaled, who heads Islamic Jihad's operations in Syria, and Abu Ali Yasser, who is in charge of the organization’s executive committee in Syria, were detained early on April 21, less than two days after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ official visit to Damascus. The Palestinian leader met with Syrian interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, on April 18.
Al Hadath noted that this is the first time leaders of Palestinian groups have been apprehended in Syria.
Islamic Jihad has called on Syria's authorities to release their detained leaders, saying that its supporters remained in Damascus after the regime change because they had not participated in hostilities on the part of former President Bashar Assad’s army.
