CAIRO, March 10. /TASS/. Hamas said it is ready to start talks on the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal immediately and accused Israel of stymieing diplomatic efforts.
"Hamas reaffirms its commitment to the ceasefire agreement and its readiness to immediately begin negotiations on the second phase of the deal. Israel, on the other hand, is refusing to start consultations, which confirms that it seeks only to stall the negotiation process," the group said on Telegram.
"The hostages can only be returned if the deal is implemented," Hamas went on to say.
The group accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of what it called "obstructing the implementation of the terms of the agreement based on purely personal interests."
On March 7, Egypt’s State Information Service reported that members of the Hamas leadership arrived in Cairo to discuss the Gaza ceasefire deal. The report said Egypt’s representatives were also holding meetings with negotiators from Qatar and the US. Cairo and Doha are seeking to provide all necessary guarantees for the implementation of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal, according to the news agency.
On March 9, Hamas confirmed the talks in Cairo, but did not say how they ended.
In mid-January, Israel and Hamas agreed to release the hostages from Gaza and establish a ceasefire in the enclave, in a deal brokered by Egypt, Qatar and the US. The three-phase deal took effect on January 19, and its first phase wrapped up on March 1. All 33 Israeli hostages that were to be freed as part of that phase, including the bodies of those who died in captivity, were brought back home. In exchange, Israel released more than 1,500 Palestinians from its prisons.
