WASHINGTON, March 6. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump said he has allowed Mexico not to pay tariffs on goods covered by the United States-Canada-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (USMCA) until April 2.
"After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement. This Agreement is until April 2nd," Trump wrote on the Truth Social network.
"I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl [smuggling]," the US President went on.
"Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!" he added.
On March 4, the U.S. administration imposed tariffs of 25% on almost all imports from Canada and Mexico, and also raised tariffs on goods from China from 10% to 20%. According to Bloomberg, the tariffs were imposed on imported goods worth about $1.5 trillion in annual terms.
At a briefing on Wednesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the Trump administration had decided to suspend tariffs on cars imported into the country under the U.S.-Canada-Mexico Free Trade Agreement for one month.
