China ready to work with Russia, US in nuclear arms control — Foreign Ministry

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Guo Jiakun emphasized that Beijing follows a no-first-use policy regarding nuclear weapons

BEIJING, February 14. /TASS/. China is ready to support the UN multinational framework on nuclear arms control, together with Russia and the United States, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Guo Jiakun stated.

"China is willing to collaborate with all parties and strongly supports the multinational arms control mechanism, established under the United Nations," he said at a briefing, commenting on US President Donald Trump’s plans to discuss nuclear arms control with the leaders of Russia and China.

The spokesman emphasized that Beijing follows a no-first-use policy regarding nuclear weapons, adopts a self-defense strategy, and maintains its nuclear forces at the minimal level necessary to guarantee national security. "China is not involved in an arms race with any country," he added.

According to Guo Jiakun, the US and Russia possess over 90% of the world's nuclear arsenal, so these two nations "bear a specific responsibility." He stressed that the reduction of stockpiles should consider the need to ensure global strategic equilibrium.

Earlier, at a press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump confirmed his intention to hold consultations with Russia and China on reducing nuclear stockpiles. The American leader also stated that the resources allocated for defense could be redirected to more constructive uses, so he would also like to discuss these matters with the leaders of Russia and China.
