WASHINGTON, February 14. /TASS/. The parties have managed to make significant progress toward resolving the Ukrainian crisis, US President Donald Trump said at a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the White House on Thursday.
"And I think we went a long way toward getting a solution to the horrible war where so many people are being killed," the American leader said, answering journalists' questions at a ceremony during talks with Modi.
Trump recalled that he had a very good telephone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin the day before. "It was excellent," the US President stressed.
Trump reiterated that the conflict in Ukraine would not have started if he had remained in power in the United States following the 2020 presidential elections.
Putin and Trump discussed, among other things, the prospects for a settlement in Ukraine by telephone on February 12. According to the Kremlin, Trump called for an early cessation of hostilities and a peaceful solution to the problem. Putin mentioned the need to eliminate the underlying causes of the conflict and agreed with Trump that a long-term settlement could be achieved through peaceful negotiations, the press service of the Russian leader said. The head of the US administration wrote on the Truth Social network that Moscow and Washington are immediately initiating negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
