Syria receives positive signals from Russia, Iran but seeks concrete actions

In November 2024, armed opposition groups launched attacks on the Syrian army

DUBAI, February 12. /TASS/. The new Syrian government has received positive signals from Russia and Iran, but it wants these signals to be translated into clear actions, according to Foreign Minister of the transitional government Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani.

"There are positive signals. However, we want them to evolve into a definitive policy," he said at the World Government Summit in Dubai. "There are strong messages concerning respect for the new Syrian administration and the sovereignty of the Syrian people."

"The problem Syrian people faced with Russia and Iran was their support for [Bashar] Assad’s regime, but the issue did not lie with Moscow or Tehran. We welcome any relationship founded on mutual respect and non-interference in each other’s internal matters," al-Shaibani said when asked about Syria's future relations with Russia and Iran. "As I have already mentioned, the Syrian people have endured significant trauma <...>. Relations should be repaired in such a way that the Syrian people feel satisfied," he continued.

In November 2024, armed opposition groups launched attacks on the Syrian army. On December 8, they entered Damascus, and President Bashar al-Assad resigned and fled the country. In January 2025, the newly-formed Syrian authorities announced that Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, would assume the role of president during the transition period.
