BEIRUT, February 6. /TASS/. Due to disagreements between President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri, Lebanon was unable to form a new government, a source in the Baabda Palace told TASS.
"Speaker Berri, who is the political leader of the Shi’a community, refused to approve the list of 24 ministers presented by the Prime Minister," the source said. "His biggest objection was the nomination of Minister for Administrative Development Lamia Moubayed," he noted.
According to the source, Aoun and Salam subsequently did not approve the candidacy of judge Abdul Rida Nasser proposed by the speaker for the same post. "A governmental deadlock ensued, after which Berri left of the palace, followed by Salam soon thereafter, with neither making any statements," the source informed.
The problem stems from the fact that both the Shi’a Amal and Hezbollah movements want to secure five representatives in the cabinet, giving them the power to block government decisions, the source explained. President Aoun and Prime Minister Salam insist instead that the fifth minister in the Shi’a lineup be an independent one.
According to the confessional structure in Lebanon, the President is nominated from the Maronite Christian community, the Prime Minister is to be a Sunni Muslim, and the Speaker of the Parliament - a Shi'a Muslim.
