BERLIN, December 19. /TASS/. The German Armed Forces will upgrade its Taurus long-range missiles, the DPA news agency reported, adding that the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) had signed a framework agreement on maintaining the operational capability of these systems.
According to the report, the agreement aims to keep the systems functional so that they can potentially be used in modern conflicts.
On December 2, DPA reported that the German government intends to significantly modify its Taurus missiles, and plans to spend 829.8 million euros to modernize these weapons. The report pointed out that the German Defense Ministry would sign a framework agreement to upgrade 479 missiles with its producer, Taurus Systems GmbH. It is expected that the upgraded missiles will be able to travel at low altitude and hit targets even when subjected to GPS jamming.
Ten years ago, the German Armed Forces procured about 600 Taurus missiles. Ukraine has repeatedly asked Germany to provide such missiles, but German Chancellor Olaf Scholz repeatedly ruled out the shipment of such missiles, which have a range of about 500 km. In October, the media reported that the German Defense Ministry plans to procure new Taurus missiles for about 2.1 billion euros. The first shipments may begin in 2029.
