Gaza deal possible, if Israel does not 'set new conditions' — Hamas

Earlier, the media, citing a senior Israeli official, reported that on the evening of December 16, an Israeli delegation traveled to Qatar for talks on Gaza

CAIRO, December 17. /TASS/. Conclusion of an agreement with Israel on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages being held in the enclave will be possible, if the Israeli side stops putting new conditions, the Palestinian movement Hamas said in a statement uploaded to its Telegram channel.

"The Islamic resistance movement Hamas confirms that, given the serious and positive negotiations afoot in Doha under the auspices of [our] Qatari and Egyptian brothers acting as mediators, reaching an agreement on a ceasefire and exchange of hostage will be possible, if [Israel] stops setting new conditions," the statement reads.

Earlier, the Ynet news portal, citing a senior Israeli official, reported that on the evening of December 16, an Israeli delegation traveled to Qatar for talks on Gaza. According to the portal's source, efforts are underway with the aim to reach an agreement by the end of this month. As the official explained, "most of the details have been agreed upon, but the main dispute is over the number of hostages to be released in the first phase."

At the end of November 2023, a humanitarian truce brokered by Cairo and Doha was established in the Gaza Strip for a week. According to the Israeli side, it made possible the release of 110 hostages. However, on December 1 last year, the ceasefire was disrupted and hostilities in the Palestinian enclave resumed. After several rounds of consultations in August - October this year with the participation of Egypt, Qatar and the United States, the parties to the conflict failed to come to terms on the parameters of the deal.

Recently, diplomatic activity on the Palestinian track resumed, with Qatar playing the role of mediator it had previously relinquished, and Israeli officials reporting an intensive negotiation process that could lead to a truce. According to the latest Israeli statements, 100 people are still being held hostage by Hamas and its allies. The radicals say at least 33 hostages held in the enclave have died and several more gone missing.
