SEOUL, December 5. /TASS/. Seven out of ten residents of the Republic of Korea are in favor of removing President Yoon Suk Yeol from office due to his attempt to impose martial law, polls by the sociological Realmeter agency reveal.
The survey was conducted on Wednesday and polled 504 people over the age of 18. A total of 73.6% of them supported the president’s impeachment, with 24% opposing it, and 2.4% undecided.
On December 4, six opposition parties initiated the process of impeaching the president. The voting is expected to take place on either December 6 or 7.
The opposition believes that the president violated the constitution and that there were no legal grounds for a declaration of martial law. Additionally, the lawmakers plan to press charges of insurrection against the president, as well as the defense and foreign ministers.
Among the people polled, 69.5% believe that Yoon Suk Yeol’s actions may be considered treason, while 24.9% disagree and 5.7% were undecided.
According to the country’s constitution, the president has the right to impose martial law, although it can be lifted by a majority vote in parliament. After Korea’s MPs had conducted the vote and approved it, the president announced that he complied with this decision. Meanwhile, the first order of the martial law command, which was issued several hours before the vote, was to ban all political activities by the parliament. The entrance to Korea’s National Assembly was blocked. South Korean media reported that the military had allegedly tried to arrest the main opposition party leader and the parliament’s spokesperson.
