SEOUL, December 5. /TASS/. South Korea’s police have launched an investigation into President Yoon Suk Yeol over his move to impose martial law after the opposition filed a complaint against him, Woo Jong-soo, head of the National Office of Investigation, said.
"We will carefully conduct the investigation based on laws and procedures," the Chosun Ilbo newspaper quoted him as saying. Woo added that the situation was "unprecedented," which was why the investigation has been entrusted to a department responsible for security.
Earlier, opposition lawmakers filed insurrection complaints against President Yoon Suk Yeol, former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Chief of the Army Staff Park An-su and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min among others.
On December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol unexpectedly declared martial law, citing the need to combat "pro-North Korean elements;" however, it was lifted in about six hours. On December 4, the opposition initiated impeachment proceedings, saying that Yoon had violated the country’s constitution because there was no reason to declare martial law.
