No plans to send Ukrainians liable for military service home, says Estonian official

"Ukraine has no legal grounds to request us to extradite these people, and we, in turn, have no legal grounds to extradite them," Head of the Estonian Interior Ministry’s Border and Migration Policy Department Janek Magi stressed

VILNIUS, December 22. /TASS/. Tallinn has no plans to send Ukrainians liable for military service home, the Postimees newspaper reports, citing Janek Magi, head of the Estonian Interior Ministry’s Border and Migration Policy Department.

"We discussed the issue with the Ukrainian ambassador and Ukraine did not ask us to do that. Ukraine has no legal grounds to request us to extradite these people, and we, in turn, have no legal grounds to extradite them," the paper quoted him as saying.

Postimees points out that on December 21, global media outlets cited an interview by Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov who allegedly said that Kiev would seek the return of Ukrainians aged 25 to 60 from Germany and other countries. However, the newspaper notes that the Ukrainian Defense Ministry refuted those reports on the same night.

In February, Postimees published a poll where over 60% of Estonian respondents spoke out against granting temporary protection to the Ukrainians liable for military service who had arrived in the country as refugees.
