Riots spark in Israeli cities with mixed population — report

According to the report, the city of Umm el-Fahm, populated predominantly by Israeli Muslim Arabs, has become one of the riot flashpoints

TEL AVIV, April 6. /TASS/. Riots sparked in a number of Israel cities with mixed Arab-Israeli population, The Jerusalem Post reported Thursday.

According to the report, the city of Umm el-Fahm, populated predominantly by Israeli Muslim Arabs, has become one of the riot flashpoints. Dozens of young people burned tires and threw rocks at policemen there. Two people were detained.

Similar riots also took place in the city of Sakhnin, as well as in Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv district of Yafo, populated by a large number of Israeli Arabs.

The riots are happening amid an escalation of tensions around the Palestine-Israeli conflict. On Thursday, northern parts of Israel were shelled with rockets from Lebanon, while shelling from the Gaza Strip in the south has been happening for two nights in a row already. Simultaneously, tensions rise around the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, where Palestinians and the Israeli police clashed several times.

Currently, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is having an emergency meeting of the military-political cabinet with participation of key ministers. Shortly before the meeting, Defense Minister Yoav Galant ordered defense structures to get ready to any potential response after the rocket shelling in the north.
